PET HEALTH ALERT:
TOXIC BLUE GREEN ALGAE FOUND IN TUALATIN RIVER
blue-green algae

Recently, blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, have been found blooming in the lower Tualatin River. Certain species of blue-green algae can produce harmful toxins that are dangerous to both humans and pets. The toxic variety of algae is usually found in standing water with exposure to sunlight, but can be found in all bodies of water in the Northwest. The Doctors at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital are following the advice of Tualatin officials and urge pet owners to prevent pets from going into the water until the bloom subsides.

Toxicity with these algae occurs through ingestion or direct contact. Pets ingesting the algae may experience symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, cramping, and lethargy, as well as numbness, dizziness, and fainting. Skin contact often produces a skin irritation or rash.

In case of contact with blue-green algae, pets should be washed thoroughly and bring your pet in immediately. We are an urgent care facility and are available from 7am-9pm, Monday-Thursday and 7am-6pm Friday and Saturday. On Sundays or after hours, please contact Dove Lewis at 503-228-7281 or The Emergency Clinic of Tualatin at 503-691-7922

If you have questions or concerns about your pet having contact with the toxic algae, please call us at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital: 503-579-3300
